“Come Undone” by Duran Duran dropped in March 1993 as the all-vibes follow-up to “Ordinary World” — aka the moment the band reminded everyone they still had it. (Well… everyone ELSE, we Duranies already knew.) The gamble paid off: it hit No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and charted solidly worldwide: Top 10 in Canada, Ireland, and Italy, and a respectable showing in the UK. Decades later, it’s still one of their most-streamed tracks.

Tiger Babies.

Unleash the Divas

The origin story is peak “this shouldn’t have worked but absolutely did.” Built quickly in Warren Cuccurullo’s home studio, the track came together from a simple loop, a bassline borrowed from producer John Jones, and a reworked idea from an older track. Translation: vibes first, overthinking later. Nick Rhodes showed up within hours, Simon Le Bon started improvising lyrics almost immediately, and within a few days and — boom, a finished song.

Fun twist: this almost wasn’t a Duran Duran track at all. It was originally floating around as a side-project idea until Simon basically claimed it on sight.

Also worth noting for trivia night flexes: John Taylor doesn’t play on this one (he’d already peaced out to L.A. after the album was “done”), and the whole thing was wrapped in about four days, including those iconic, breathy backing vocals from Tessa Niles after being told to, quote, “unleash the diva.”

The video, directed by Julien Temple, leaned all the way into surreal, watery chaos—shot partly in an aquarium, with chains, dreamlike vignettes, and just enough “what did I just watch?” energy to make it unforgettable. Basically, “Come Undone” is what happens when speed, instinct, and a little bit of all-vibes attitude collides.

Chart Performance and Legacy

Peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100

Reached #13 on the UK Singles Chart

Became one of the standout hits from the band’s 90s resurgence

Still a fan favorite (and yes, a certified late-night headphones track)

Come Undone Lyrics

Mine, immaculate dream made breath and skin
I’ve been waiting for you.
Signed with a home tattoo,
Happy Birthday to You was created for you

Can’t ever keep from falling apart at the seams
Can’t I believe you’re taking my heart to pieces

Oh, it’ll take a little time,
Might take a little crime
To come undone now

We’ll try to stay blind
To the hope and fear outside
Hey, child, stay wilder than the wind
And blow me in to cry

Who do you need, who do you love
When you come undone?
Who do you need, who do you love
When you come undone?

Words, playing me deja vu
Like a radio tune I swear I’ve heard before
Chill, is it something real
Or the magic I’m feeding off your fingers?

Can’t ever keep from falling apart at the seams
Can I believe you’re taking my heart to pieces?

Lost in a snow filled sky,
We’ll make it alright
To come undone now

We’ll try to stay blind
To the hope and fear outside.
Hey, child, stay wilder than the wind
And blow me in to cry…

Who do you need, who do you love
When you come undone?
Who do you need, who do you love
When you come undone?

(Can’t ever keep from falling apart)
Who do you need, who do you love
When you come undone?
(Can’t ever keep from falling apart)
Who do you need, who do you love?

(Can’t ever keep from falling apart)
Who do you love
When you come undone?
(Can’t ever keep from falling apart)
