As the calendar turns to a new year and we stumble into 2025, one thing remains certain: Duran Duran knows how to keep us on our toes. Decade after decade, they continue to redefine themselves, finding new ways to surprise and delight while, somehow, remaining true to their roots.
Few bands in the annals of music history can boast a trajectory as enduring and resilient. While others have splintered, imploded, beat each other up in the press or, worse, on stage, Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes, and Roger Taylor have remained a nucleus around which generations of Duranies have orbited. Sure, the lineup’s seen its changes, and the music industry has undergone tectonic shifts, but this incredible cadre of musicians remains the constant that sustains the collective heartbeat of our diehard Duranie fanbase.
Looking back, it seems like they’ve lived a thousand lives since their debut more than four decades ago. There’s been times when we’ve hardly recognized them as the doo-doo-doo-doo boys from the sailboat in Antiqua. Just when you get use to the shaggy hair and synth-funk, they go and shake it up again with smart black suits and Timbaland/Timberlake hip-hop rhythms.
In other words, you can try to predict what this ever-evolving, ever-inspiring, and ever-so-cool band will do next — and you’ll probably be wrong.
What’s to come for our boys from Birmingham (and thereabouts)?
There’s been chatter about a European summer tour, a musical written by Nick and John, and Reportage finally seeing the light of day. That elusive album, crafted in the wake of Astronaut’s Fab Five reunion, has remained cloaked in secrecy since being shelved for Red Carpet Massacre. Over the years, it has become the Holy Grail of unreleased Duran Duran projects with contributions from the original guitarist Andy Taylor. Bringing Reportage to life in 2025 would be nothing short of monumental in Duranie world.
The success of their Halloween shows in 2024 also raises intriguing possibilities for 2025.
With their latest album providing a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get dirty up on the Danse Macabre, could Duran Duran establish themselves as the quintessential Hallows Eve band, captivating costumed audiences at iconic venues? Duranies didn’t have THAT on our BINGO cards.
