I became interested in Duran Duran in about 1982 and have followed them ever since. I love the catchy songs, exotic videos and the band members themselves. I’ve always found Duran Duran have been able to keep up and still put out great music. To me, they are and will always be GOAT.

Duran Duran to release Free to Love, a new single with Nile Rodgers

Liner Notes: Story at a Glance Duran Duran is back with “Free to Love,” a new 2026 single created with longtime collaborator Nile Rodgers of Chic. When will Free to Love be released? Don’t worry, you won’t need to wait long. The new song will be released April 23, 2026 ahead of Duran Duran’s global tour. From “The Reflex” to Notorious and Danse Macabre, this latest release is sure to tap into Nile’s signature funky groove, and Duran Duran’s 40+ years of pop music innovation.

The Official “Free to Love” Release is Coming from Simon, John, Nick, Roger (and Nile).

Here’s Why Duran Duran Fans Are Already Excited

Let’s just get this out of the way: when Duran Duran and Nile Rodgers get back in a room together, something good always happens. Something with funky basslines, mega rhythm, and wow-factor appeal that nobody can ignore (except for maybe the critics who never give the Durans the credit they deserve, but I digress… )

On April 23, Duran Duran will release a brand-new single, “Free to Love,” arriving just ahead of their US spring tour plus UK/European summer tour — because of course they never ease into anything. Why would they start now?

Free to Love, Here’s What We Know

Being a Duran fan means reading between the lines like it’s a second job. In other words, we’re operating on pure vibes and scant information. (Cue the Too Much Information song…)

“Free to Love” appears to be a standalone release, with no confirmed physical format. The last time the band gave us one of those was 2007’s “Falling Down,” back when “streaming” was just something you did at the local creek.

Based on the band’s 2025 social media post, there’s a strong possibility this track was born during the Danse Macabre sessions with Nile at Abbey Road Studios, which is pretty exciting because when Nile gets involved, you know the groove is going to be tighter than a pair of 1981 spandex hotpants.

No notes. Truly.

Duran Duran Fab Meets the Nile Rodgers Funk

If you’re new here (first of all, welcome, but also… how?), let’s review. Nile Rodgers is not just a Duran collaborator. He is a force multiplier. An idea guy. The master blaster of get out of your chair and dance.

He’s the guy behind:

  • Chic: “Le Freak” (you already heard it in your head)
  • Sister Sledge: “We Are Family” — yes, that one
  • Diana Ross: “I’m Coming Out”
  • Madonna: “Like a Virgin”
  • David Bowie: “Let’s Dance”

In other words, Nile Rodgers is a cultural infrastructure all by himself. So when Duran Duran taps into that energy, history tells us to pay attention.

“Nile is the only person who can walk into a room and make four very different people feel like they are part of the same groove.”

“Working with Nile Rodgers was like going to university.”

– John Taylor

Source: John often discusses Nile’s “musical therapy” in his autobiography, In the Pleasure Groove: Love, Death, and Duran Duran, where he credits Nile with teaching him the “CHIC” way of locked-in bass playing.

Legend has it, the band first talked collab with Rodgers after they heard the groove+guitar on INXS’s Original Sin. What followed was Rodgers’ remix of “The Reflex,” which – any self-respecting Duranie knows – became their first Billboard No. 1 and biggest-selling single. BFFs (best funky friends), indeed.

Duran + Rodgers, the Collab History

From there, the collaboration reached “just get a room already” status, especially during times of turmoil when the Durans were standing on the edge of a creative quay with fog in their minds. I guess that makes Nile their ripple river yellow, if you will.

Simon Says;

“Nile Rodgers kept us from killing each other.”

Probably.

Case in point: 1986. The band was in flux, side projects were pulling them apart, and the future was looking very Duranless. Nile stepped in to produce the entire Notorious album, giving us a #2 title track. Simon said Nile was a “living legend,” and admitted the band might not have made it without him. Simon also said that Rodgers’ can “talk forever”. Might not want to get trapped in an elevator with Nile and Nick, know what I mean?

2002-2004

The Fab Five reunion needed a certain je ne sais quoi, so Nile co-produced three tracks on Astronaut. The result? A No. 1 spot in 15 countries and a global sigh of adoration.

Is Nile whispering his funky secrets in her ear?

2014-2022

The band summoned Nile again for Paper Gods, where he jumped on for “Pressure Off”, a track so infectious it should come with a medical warning. This blossomed into the 2022 tour where Chic staged a nightly takeover, culminating in a Madison Square Garden performance of “Notorious” that likely blew the city’s power grid.

2023-Present

Most recently, he brought the disco-sunshine to “Black Moonlight” from Danse Macabre.

The Hitmaker

Through every decade, Nile’s secret weapon of choice remains “The Hitmaker,” a 1960 Fender Strat, a guitar that’s seen more hits than a boxing ring.

April 23, 2026

We know the drill: a cryptic post appears from DDHQ, and Duranies all around the world suddenly become forensic musicologists. Then, we speculate wildly, sometimes heatedly.

  • Are we getting the “Black Moonlight” with Nile’s signature jangly guitar riffs and an infectious bass line?
  • Or will it be a return to the “Pressure Off” time slot with a disco rock groove that blends the band’s classic synth-pop sound with modern production techniques and a heavy funk influence?
  • They could surprise us with a Notorious throwback featuring gated-drum-whipcrack percussion and sharp horn sections. That would actually be pretty cool.

As long as it doesn’t involve Lindsay Lohan, we’re okay with whatever they do.

At the end of the day, we’re all just waiting to see which version of the band shows up. But whether it’s a bass-heavy floor-filler or a high-horn anthem, we already know we’ll be playing it on a loop.
